First Prize Winners

Congratulations to Mayuko Nagata and Dylan Huang (piano students of Herbert Waltl), for winning first prize in their respective age categories at the "GRAND PRIZE VIRTUOSO" International Music Competition. Additionally, they have been chosen to be in the selected group of winners who are invited to perform at Gläserner Saal, Musikverein in Vienna, one of the best sounding concert halls in the world and the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

Congratulations Whitney Roberts and Kumiko Nagato

Congratulations to Dr. Benjamin Sorrell's clarinet students Whitney Roberts and Kumiko Nagato on making it into the PVHS Orchestra!!
It will be the second year in the orchestra for Whitney and Kumiko's first year as an incoming freshman.
PVHS Orchestra and Wind Ensemble (Whitney plays in both) just received superior rating at the SCBOA festival. Congrats again.

Congratulations Annika Dietiker and Thomas Valente

Congratulations to Annika Dietiker and Thomas Valente on their beautiful performances at the MTAC South Bay Branch Honors Recital 2017 at El Camino College! Annika and Thomas have been selected to play in the Honors Recital after they scored high at this year's CM test.
Thomas will additionally perform at the MTAC State Convention in Santa Clara this summer.

Violinist Dr. Myroslava (Mira) Khomik

We are thrilled to have Ukrainian-born violinist Dr. Myroslava (Mira) Khomik join our team!
Mrs. Khomik is a winner of international competitions and awards, including the Remember Enescu Competition in Romania, Ugzhorod Silver Bells in Ukraine, and the New Names of Ukraine. She has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in Ukraine, Spain, US, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan, and her performances were broadcast on National TV and Radio in Ukraine, the US, and in Asia.

Dylan Huang, piano, had great success in New York.

As one of the winners of the international music competition, Golden Classical Music Awards, Dylan had the honor to play in the famous Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York on March 5th.
He thrilled the audience with his beautiful performance.

Wenjun Qi, Guitar

Please welcome Wenjun Qi, guitar, to our faculty. Wenjun recently graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

Dylan Huang: Honorable Mention

Six-year-old Dylan Huang's (piano) outstanding talent has been recognized by the judges when he was awarded Honorable Mention at the CAPMT Honors Competition January 29, 2017.
The Honors Competition is the highest level program at CAPMT. Hc student Dylan was the youngest contestant in the competition.

RJ Wakefield: First Place

Outstanding performances at the VOCE Winners Recital.
Congratulations to all winners and especially to our student, RJ Wakefield, oboist, who won first place in two consecutive years.


Dylan Huang, 6 yrs. old, won First Prize in the Golden Classical Music Awards International Music Competition, New York. He competed in the Young Musician category (piano solo - 8years old and under). Additionally, Dylan is one of the winners selected to perform at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York on March 5th. Having had only a little bit more than one year of piano studies, this is an awesome achievement.

Congratulatons RJ Wakefield

After winning first place at this year’s VOCE competition, oboist RJ Wakefield, took home another first place (and $300) in the Senior Woodwind category at the 2016 SCHOLARSHIP AUDITIONS. Both competitions are offered by MTAC.

Congratulations to our oboe student ROBERT (RJ) WAKEFIELD-CARL and his teacher AMY GOLLINS on winning FIRST PLACE at the VOCE (Vocalists, Orchestral Instrumentalists and Chamber Ensembles) South Bay Competition.

RJ competed in the category “Intermediate Solo Winds” with the following pieces: Concerto in c minor, Allegro by Allesandro Marcello Six Metamorphoses after Ovid, Op. 49, No. 3 “Niobe” for solo Oboe by Benjamin Britten
As a first place winner, RJ will move on to the State Finals which will be held in April at Chapman University. Way to go RJ!


On February 12th our voice student ELIZABETH ANDERSON performed "Red" by Taylor Swift and she was one of three performers chosen to advance to the SOUTH BAY TEEN IDOL FINALS organized by FREEDOM4U. The finals will be held on March 11th at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center (Time TBA). Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for teens, 12 and under are free. Tickets are available on the FREEDOM4U website. Come out and support her, it will be a fun event!
